How to Choose the Right Material for Your Gate

Choosing the material for a residential gate is one of the most important decisions you will make in the process of developing your property. The material directly influences the appearance, durability, maintenance cost and final price of the gate. ## Wrought Iron - Classic Elegance Wrought iron remains the preferred choice for property owners seeking a classic and imposing appearance. The main advantage is the ability to create organic forms and complex ornamental details through hot forging. Each piece becomes unique, giving the gate personality and character. The disadvantage of wrought iron is its susceptibility to corrosion if not properly protected. A wrought iron gate requires repainting every 5-7 years and annual inspection of vulnerable points. The initial cost is higher due to intensive labour, but durability can exceed 50 years with adequate maintenance. ## Galvanised Steel - Strength and Versatility Hot-dip galvanised steel offers the best ratio between mechanical strength and anti-corrosion protection. The zinc layer protects the base metal even under intense weather exposure, requiring no additional maintenance for 15-20 years. The design of galvanised steel gates tends to be more geometric and modern, due to limitations in processing galvanised profiles. The price is moderate, and the range of available profiles allows solutions for any budget. ## Aluminium - Lightweight and Maintenance-Free Aluminium is the ideal option for large sliding gates, thanks to its reduced weight which places less strain on the automation motor. It never rusts and can be powder coated in any RAL colour. The main disadvantage is lower mechanical strength compared to steel, which limits designs with very large unsupported spans. The price per kilogram is higher than steel, but the reduced weight partially offsets this difference. ## Our Recommendation For a standard residential gate, we recommend S235 steel with hot-dip galvanising and electrostatic powder coating. This combination offers 20+ year durability, excellent appearance and a competitive price. For luxury projects or heritage buildings, wrought iron remains irreplaceable.
